The Day of Rinas (Period #1)
“Please…could you spare some change?” Asked a homeless man with the despair that knows only terror to many people in business suits, young adults, and small kids with their parents. When he went to sit down, he heard change fall into his cup. “Thank you—” he didn’t see who dropped the change. When he looked left, he saw a black haired kid wearing a red uniform and black pants ran and turned the corner.
That would not be the last time he got change from Rinas Daimon.
*****
“I’m home!” Yelled Rinas, who took off his shoes and put on his slippers once he walked in his house. He walked up his stairs and immediately went into his room. A few minutes later he came out wearing a short sleeve shirt and shorts. He walked towards his mom’s room then pulled a nearby string. A staircase fell from the top of the wall, which led him to the attic. Once he walked up the stairs, he began looking around. “I think it’s time to look for something to sell!” After tossing items all over the place, he found a mysteriously shaped box with one side half black and the other half white. Rinas was certain that after all the times he’s been in there he's never seen it before. He opened the box. Dust gathered in his face. Wiping away the dust he looked and picked up an incredibly ancient looking book. It was full of holes, looked torn in some pages, the cover had cuts on each side, and the title, “The World of Bethumet,” was coated with unsightly colors. He slowly opened it.
Rinas immediately blacked out.
*****
Rinas slowly opened his eyes. He tried to figure out what happened. He grabbed his head as he got up feeling sore and tired. He looked around and didn’t see the box or the book.
“Well…that’s weird…” he thought. “Did I really fall asleep here?” He heard a sound of stirring somewhere. “Who’s there?” He looked around but didn’t see anyone.
“Wh…what the—” shouted the stunned voice of a girl. “Where am I?!?” Rinas was dumbfounded.
“W-who’s there? Whe—” He turned around and stared into the blue eyes of a young and beautiful looking girl wearing a light blue cape, some strange armor, and a blue skirt. “So…beautiful…” he thought dreamily, until he realized, “W-wait a minute! How did you get in my house?!?” The tip of a finely created sword was placed at Rinas’s neck.
“Who do you think you’re talking to?!?” She shouted. “I’ll be doing the talking her—” She looked around. She screamed, then yelled, “Where am I?!? Where did y—” She attempted to grab Rinas but passed right through him. Now both Rinas and the girl were confused. Rinas tried to touch her, but passed right through her.
“…This is…weird…” said Rinas who sounded confounded.
“…I’d second that…” said the equally confounded girl.
“Uh…are you…some sort of spirit?”
“No! Of course not! I’m about as alive as alive can be!”
“Well…then who are you? My name is Rinas Daimon!”
“...My name is Courage. I live in a town called Thgil.”
“I see. Well, clearly something’s messed up here. If I had to guess, you must have come from this book that I saw...”
“Are you saying that I’ve come from a story? How original!”
“I know, but it would explain a lot. I mean, whatever you’re wearing right now…I’d see it in an anime convention.”
“Those last words confound me! But from what I gather, you’re not at all in favor of my attire!”
“Well…you’re wearing a cape…some sort of armored shirt—”
“It’s called a hauberk.” RIGHHTTT….Rinas thought.
“And a really out of style skirt. I’m assuming you’re from medieval times!” Courage groaned.
“Wow, you’re such a pest! What the heck’s going on around here?”
“Who knows? We’ll just have to run with it for now. Courage, come with me!”
“Well, I don’t seem to have any choice in the matter, seeing that I’m a part of your conscience.”
“…Wait, does that mean you know what I’m thinking?”
“Actually, yes it does! So I know what you said earlier!” Rinas grumbled.
“So much for privacy!” Rinas stormed out of the attic and walked out of the house. “Man…what am I going to do with you? I can’t have you knowing what I’m thinking!” He didn’t get a response. “Courage? Courage, are you still with me?” Silence. “Maybe she’s just confined to the attic. Or maybe I was—”
“WHAT IN…What is this place!?!? Everything looks so strange and out of place!!!”
“…Hallucinating.” Rinas sighed. “This…my lady friend…is New York…” “Wh…no…way…I’ve never seen anything like this!” Of course not, Rinas thought. “W-what do I do? I’m scared!”
“Don’t worry about it…the buildings won’t hurt you!”
“But what about those!?” She pointed to cars passing by.
“Well…those cars can hurt…but…” Oh snap, Rinas thought, I have to teach her about how everything works, don’t I? NOOO!!!!
“Oh, Rinas! Please teach me!!!” Rinas clenched his teeth.
“…Fine…I’ll teach you…what I know…this will take a while…” They walked around, crossing streets, buying foods that Courage had never seen, and watching a baseball game at a nearby park, all while Rinas was telling Courage everything about his world. “Hey, I meant to ask you...your world’s called Bethumet, right?”
“Yes. So?”
“It’s a very convenient name…because that’s exactly the city I live in!”
“What? Now that’s just strange…wait, could this be Bethumet reincarnated?”
“It might be. Your age happened so long ago…” Rinas stopped short.
“What’s wrong?”
“…Them…” He glared in the direction of a very huge, muscular man, wearing a large shirt and with a couple of his friends holding bottles of liquor in their hands.
“Well, well, well…ain’t it nice to see you Rinas!”
“…Hello, Ken…”
“Aw, what’s with that response? This was a chance meeting! I never expected to see you here! But with that said, since we did meet, I guess you can pay me my usual wad of cash today!”
“Ah…sorry about that…but I’m totally broke. I’ll see what I can sell in a week, ok?”
“Who is this jerk?” yelled Courage. Not now, Rinas thought.
“A week, huh? But I’m having a very nice friend over tonight…I’d like to have a suitable cash crop. Oh well…I can just buy him a gift.” Ken held out his hand. “I’ll take that shirt of yours. That should be his size.” Rinas groaned internally.
“What a fool!” yelled Courage. “Like you’re going to listen to a softie like him, huh Rinas?” Rinas motioned to take off his shirt. “W-what the heck are you doing? You coward!” This guy’s a monster, he said to Courage internally, I’d rather not face a monster, thank you! “I’ve faced demons for target practice that are tougher than him! You can’t do this!” Rinas took it off anyway and handed to him.
“Good boy! Now…here’s your reward for being so good!” A huge, fisted knuckle went straight at Rinas’s face.
Rinas stopped it with one finger.
“W…what the!?!?” said a stunned Ken. Rinas’s sentiments exactly.
“You’re not going to run from a weakling with me around!” yelled Courage. “I’m glad: you can use my powers in your world. So use it!” Rinas then, while still confused, instinctively punched Ken in the stomach and sent him backwards. Everyone around the scene except Courage couldn’t believe what they just saw.
“G…w…what did…” Ken struggled to say, throwing up in the process. Rinas, seeing an opportunity to run, grabbed his shirt and ran. “G…get back here you—” But Rinas was long gone.
